Bail Application Rejected

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A trailer driver allegedly responsible for a crash that killed a 21-year-old woman was denied bail after being accused of showing no remorse.

Deputy public prosecutor Zulfadzly Hassan noted that Marhizan Johari, 51, even made a “peace” sign during his earlier court appearance, stirring outrage in light of the viral accident footage.

Prosecution Awaits Reports

The charge, though bailable, led magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan to reject bail, setting Jan 24 for the next hearing. This decision awaits further reports on the accident.

Charges Under Road Transport Act

Marhizan pleaded not guilty to reckless driving along Jalan Kebun Sireh on Nov 13. If convicted under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, he faces severe penalties.

Details of the Victims

The victim, clerk Lee Zi Rou, was killed when a cargo container crushed her car. A second victim, Tan Chou Theng, was severely injured and remains in recovery. Hundreds gathered to bid farewell to Lee at her funeral.
